The One Where We Move Together

Some days, even thinking about exercising feels like a myth.
Especially when you’re sat in your towel, scrolling on your phone and the only thing you’re lifting is a cup of coffee.
But do you know what gets you off the sofa quicker than caffeine?
A friend dropping a voice note saying, “Come on, girl, we’re doing this—even if it’s just a walk to Tesco.”

Why Go Solo When You Can Squad Up?
Sure, solo workouts have their place.
But laughing with your friends halfway through squats because neither of you can take it seriously?
That’s movement.
That’s connection.
That’s real life.
Here’s why moving with friends makes it better:
Accountability Without the Pressure: You’re more likely to show up if you know someone’s waiting—even if you both moan about it the whole way there.
Energy Boost: When you're flagging, they’ll hype you up. And next time, you’ll do it for them.
Laughter Burns Calories Too: A good giggle mid-workout counts. We’re calling it.
Wins Feel Bigger: Whether you’ve completed a 5K or just survived a set of star jumps, someone’s there cheering you on—and maybe suggesting a Greggs run after.
Finding Your Fitness People
If your current mates think “exercise” means chasing after the bus (and fair enough), don’t stress.
Your tribe’s out there.
Local classes: Look for community centres, leisure centres, park groups. No fancy gyms needed.
Parent Walks and Meetups: Pushchairs, toddlers, chaos—come as you are.
Social Media Groups: Loads of Facebook and Insta pages for local walks, dance meetups, chill workout crews.
Work Mates: Drag a colleague out for a lunchtime stroll. Bonus points if you both moan about it together.
Just Ask: Post a story: “Anyone fancy a little fitness linkup?” You’ll be surprised who replies.
Types of Fitness Mates (And Why They're Gold)
The Organiser: Always knows what’s happening and when. Without them, you’d still be deciding what shoes to wear.
The Wild One: Suggests random stuff like roller disco fitness or dancehall classes. Keeps it spicy.
The Hype Queen: Gasses you up after one squat. Makes you feel like Beyoncé.
The Silent Support: Maybe you’re just sending “I moved today” texts back and forth. Still counts.
Keep It Light, Keep It Moving
Movement doesn’t have to look a certain way.
It can be:
Fitness & Fry-Up club (you walk, then you hit the café)
WhatsApp dance-offs
Step count battles with a silly forfeit (“Loser buys the next round!”)
Walking book clubs (talk the plot while you get your steps in)
Girl Math: Fitness Edition
Because sometimes the best motivation is knowing it makes sense in your own way:
Walk a mile to Tesco = basically cancels out the snacks you buy.
Girl math: calories walked > calories eaten.
Do a workout together = earned the right to sit in the park chatting for two hours after.
Girl math: exercise + emotional therapy = net gain.
Brisk walk to brunch = brunch is basically guilt-free.
Girl math: steps logged = pancakes justified.
Join a free community workout = money saved is technically money made.
Girl math: £0 spent = £100 vibe boost.
Take the long way home from the station = didn't need that expensive gym membership anyway.
Girl math: cardio without direct debit.
Real Talk from the Group Chat
Your fitness journey doesn’t have to be perfect.
It doesn’t even have to be serious.
If you’re dancing round the kitchen with your best mate, chasing kids around the park or doing a few stretches in your pyjamas before bed—it all counts.
Movement is movement.
Progress is progress.
Find the people who get it.
The ones who make it fun.
Then grab your battered trainers, press play on the playlist you love and get moving—together.
Your people are out there.
And they’re probably just as tired,
messy and brilliant as you are!
